Following a dramatic 38-21 victory over the DHL Stormers in Cape Town, the national team has arrived at their second destination of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour. Consequently, this highly anticipated All Blacks return to Durban marks the squad’s first appearance at Kings Park since 2017. Over 47,000 roaring fans welcomed the team back to South African soil, kicking off an iconic mid-week tour structure not seen in modern rugby for decades.
A Rare Mid-Week Tour Experience
In modern international rugby, non-test tour matches against provincial clubs have become exceptionally rare. Legendary figures like Richie McCaw only played a single non-test fixture during his entire career. However, the current squad is embracing the special opportunity to play provincial powerhouses across South Africa.
“It’s just something new and something we haven’t experienced,” shared winger Rieko Ioane following the opening match. “A lot of this team wouldn’t have traveled to Durban or Pretoria. It’s going to be awesome to experience all that.”
“Mid-week tour matches offer unique team bonding and give emerging players essential high-pressure international experience,” noted the touring management.
Historical Track Record in Durban
Durban holds fond memories for the national team. Out of 11 matches played in the coastal city, New Zealand has secured victory eight times. Their last appearance in 2016 resulted in a historic 57-14 triumph over the Springboks at Kings Park. Additionally, Durban was the site of the pivotal 1996 first Test victory during New Zealand’s first-ever series win in South Africa.
The Hollywoodbets Kings Park Challenge
Despite past successes, playing at Kings Park—famously known as “The Shark Tank”—is always a formidable challenge. The 55,000-capacity stadium features steep stands and an electric atmosphere generated by passionate local supporters.
Furthermore, the host team lineup includes a fascinating narrative: former two-time World Cup-winning midfielder Ma’a Nonu has been named on the Sharks bench to face his former national side.
Match Schedule and Coverage
The match against the Hollywoodbets Sharks kicks off at 7:00 PM local time on Tuesday, August 11 (5:00 AM Wednesday, August 12 NZT). English referee Matthew Carley will take charge of the whistle for this historic tour clash.
