Big news for Black Ferns fans! Whitney Hansen has been officially named the new Black Ferns head coach, taking over from Allan Bunting on a contract through to the end of 2027. New Zealand Rugby announced the appointment on December 18, 2025, just weeks after the team’s bronze medal finish at the 2025 Rugby World Cup.
The daughter of legendary All Blacks coach Sir Steve Hansen steps into one of the biggest roles in women’s rugby, becoming only the second woman to lead the Black Ferns.
Whitney Hansen’s Coaching Background
The new Black Ferns head coach brings impressive credentials and a deep rugby pedigree:
- Interned with the Black Ferns during their 2022 Rugby World Cup victory.
- Assistant coach at Matatū, helping secure the 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki title.
- Head of Rugby at Matatū (2024-2025).
- Inaugural head coach of the Black Ferns XV programme in 2024.
- Set-piece specialist for Canterbury’s successful Farah Palmer Cup teams.
Hansen will be joined by assistant coaches Tony Christie and Riki Flutey, with further appointments expected soon.
